Sump Pump Repair and Replacement

If you think that your sump pump needs to be repaired or replaced, you should check a few things before calling a plumber. With these steps, you may save yourself the time and money of replacing or repairing your sump pump. You also need to ensure your sump pump is functioning so as to avoid any flooding in the basement. A few simple things can prevent your sump pump from not working.

Before you replace or repair your sump pump, check the following things:

  • Make sure the outlet that the sump pump electric cord is connected to has power.

No power will result in to a dysfunctional sump pump. If you have an electric tester, use this. Or just take a night light and plug it in to your outlet or radio and see if the light is on.

  • Sump pumps come with two electric cords – one belongs to the sump pump motor and the other one connects to the float. Unplug the top electric code and connect it directly to the outlet. If you hear the sump pump running, that means that the sump pump is functioning and the float, which provides the signal to kick in is stuck and not functioning. The problem here is within the float. Remove the cover of the sump pump, and take a look inside. If you have enough water in the tank, the float should be up, and that is how the sump pump motor triggers on. If the float is down, and you can shake it or pull it up or just release it, and then the sump pump model will kicks. That means that this will need to be replaced and most of the time you cannot replace the flat unit itself, as it comes as one part with the sump pump.
