Upfront Pricing is Where Most Contractors Fail in Home Repair Services

Working with clients over the last few decades has given us the insight of our advantages against the competitors in the home improvement and repair services.  One of the most common things we hear from clients when they hired someone else first is that the sump pump repair started at $200 but the contractor ended up charging us $400 and that is of course a minor repair compared to a bathroom renovation that if the price changes later on by 25% the client might have an increase of a couple of thousands of dollars over the initial quote that he received.  Most people, including us, feel that this is not right.

Contractors protect themselves in an estimate or any quote that they give you that the price might change but the feelings and bitter taste stay if the quote that a client received ended up being different.

upfront-costThe first thing you need to know is that there is a trick that a salesman/contractor will try to stick his foot in your door, and the way he will do that is to give you the pitch of only $49.99 for the drain or sewer cleaning or only $99 for labor to replace a water heater.  Well there is no bigger lie as it is impossible to do the job at this price unless there are later circumstances that might change, and these circumstances surprisingly happen 99.9% of the time.   You as a homeowner or business owner that need to replace a boiler or install a new water heater once in a lifetime cannot predict and look five or ten steps ahead if a dishonest crooked home repair company will give you a quote with a small print note that will end up charging you more.  By the time you find out that you need to pay more you will get all the explanations but it will be too late because you do not have the technical expertise or knowledge to argue anything but “you told me it would be such and such price”.

Having an honest contractor on your side for life is priceless.  If you are the kind of person that is looking online for a contractor or home repair services and you are always looking for the lowest quote you will always end up with those guys that I am talking about that will give you the lowest initial quote but you will also end up paying for a poor job that may last only a short time or you end up paying more than the quote and in both options you will end up paying double.

The cost of building materials and our hourly rate of contractor is fairly known and it includes all the things that need to be in place in order to serve the client with a quality repair service.  If someone gives you a lower quote for repair or installation you should suspect that there may be a shortcut and we saw a few times that people have paid top money based on a lower quote but they ended up also getting used equipment, like boiler or water heater, that explained why the initial repair quote was low.

All that I mention above are ok for some contractors but we, and we believe that most home improvement repair contractors are honest.  Just find a good one that has been in the business a long time and has some respect and dignity for his company and he has built it for a long time and he will serve you for life.  If you live in our neighborhood, north jersey or Bergen County NJ then pirate contractors are probably not for you.
